Hearing Loss? There's a Drug for That.

Just because a drug is approved by the FDA doesn't mean it's safe, which is why these drugs aren't FDA-approved. Actually the human drugs are yet to come, but much closer to reality now that researchers at the University of Florida have developed a method to induce temporary hearing loss in human test subjects (they make them listen to loud music for 4 hours).

The best way to retain our hearing over the years is of course preventing exposure to loud noises, as damage to our inner ears' hair cells from noise is presently irreversible. But prototype drugs have been tested on animals that have prevented noise induced hearing loss, including one that mimics a protective inner ear protein.

Side effects of Earfixiflax™ may include permanent blindness, X-ray hearing, and Barry Manilobes.
